Getting Inclusionary Housing Right

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 12PM

Cities across Santa Clara County are considering this powerful tool to build more new affordable homes without subsidy.

But done wrong it can fall short, or even stop the development of new homes in its tracks. Learn how it works, and how to get it right!

Many of our local cities are joining forces right now in a shared nexus study, the wonky and in-depth analysis that assesses the feasibility of local residential development and the potential for developers of market-rate housing to add a share of affordable homes to their buildings.

If cities require too few affordable homes or affordability that’s too shallow, they leave public benefits on the table. Too much, and developers can’t build any housing at all.

Come hear about local cities that are getting it right: successfully using inclusionary housing policies to achieve mixed-income communities, generate funding to subsidize deeper levels of affordability, and gain valuable land for affordable homes!

You worked hard to get key community priorities into your local housing element- the eight-year plan each city must create to meet the housing needs of all its residents and make space for future growth. In 2025, that two years of the planning (6th) cycle are complete, how are housing elements in Santa Clara County delivering? What are the key trends happening across the county? What programs will need your engagement over the coming year?

SV@Home’s Policy Team engages with local elected officials and city staff, developers, and grassroots advocates all year. Watch the recording to learn more about local progress on housing elements so you can be better equipped to understand and participate in your community’s policy decisions. View the slides here.

SV@Home’s Policy in Action @ Home series (PIA) is a monthly, informal discussion convening Housers to engage on hot housing topics. Every month, we select a topic or current event, bring in an expert to give a brief presentation or interview, and then open up the discussion to ask questions, float new ideas, and identify potential areas for shared action.

SV@Home strives to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals, including individuals with disabilities, to engage fully. To request an accommodation or for inquiries about accessibility, please email events@siliconvalleyathome.org
