The Housing Needs of Undocumented Residents

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, JULY 25TH 12PM

Undocumented immigrants face unique and often invisible barriers to housing—exclusion from federal programs, fear of retaliation, and discriminatory screening practices.

Join us for a timely conversation on how we can break down these barriers and advance housing solutions that include everyone—regardless of immigration status.

We’ll explore:
– Why undocumented immigrants are excluded from key housing programs
– How fear and discrimination drive housing instability
– Local policies and community-based models creating real change

About this event

26% of people have a disability, yet it’s estimated that less than 6% of the national housing supply is designed to be accessible. As housing communities are created, they don’t often meet the diverse accessibility and inclusion needs of people with disabilities. While code sets the baseline for what’s required, no holistic guidelines define an implementable, progressive approach to creating truly accessible and inclusive housing.

The Kelsey, a disability-forward advocacy and housing organization that advances disability-forward housing solutions, has recently released the first version of a new national standard and tool: The Housing Design Standards for Accessibility and Inclusion. These standards are a curated source of over 300+ elements that support design choices, development strategies, building features, or operational policies that support accessibility and inclusion for designers, developers, property managers, and community members to advance disability-forward housing in their communities. Developers building in San Jose can get extra points in the City of San Jose NOFA committing to use the standards in their buildings.

Tonight’s event is a part of Affordable Housing Month, powered by SV@Home.
