Housing at the Heart of Transit: Tamien Station Apartments Grand Opening

SV@Home joined transit, housing, and government leaders to celebrate the opening of Tamien Station Apartments, a new transit-oriented affordable housing community delivering 135 homes next to the Tamien Light Rail and Caltrain stations in San José.

On January 23, 2026, SV@Home joined the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, The Core Companies, state and local leaders, and community partners to celebrate the grand opening of Tamien Station Apartments in San José. The ribbon cutting marked the opening of 135 new affordable homes located directly next to the Tamien Light Rail and Caltrain stations, the first transit-oriented development housing to open under VTA’s portfolio in more than 20 years. The milestone underscores the power of coordinated public and private partnerships to deliver housing where transit access is built in.

Developed by The Core Companies on VTA-owned land, Tamien Station Apartments provides housing for individuals and families earning up to 60% of Area Median Income. The community includes studio, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, with half of the homes reserved for rapid rehousing to support residents most at risk of homelessness. Designed as a true transit oriented community, the development pairs its location with thoughtful amenities, including a daycare center, rooftop playground, food pantry, fitness room, and community spaces, as well as transit passes to support car-free, connected living.

Tamien Station Apartments is the first phase of a larger mixed-income neighborhood that will ultimately deliver 555 homes at the site and reflects a broader effort by VTA and affordable housing developers to build equitable, sustainable communities near transit across Santa Clara County. It also builds momentum for additional TOD projects already underway, including VTA’s collaboration with East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation at the Great Mall and with Eden Housing at River Oaks. Together, these partnerships show how public land can be leveraged to advance affordable housing, climate goals, and stronger community connections, and why continued investment in transit-oriented development matters.
