Nineteen different organizations and cities will be hosting events during the week, so it will be a unique opportunity to learn about the many facets of affordable housing in our community. SV@Home’s annual Policy Breakfast brings together policymakers and advocates to talk about the big issues in affordable housing. This year’s breakfast will focus on the different approaches to our housing crisis– some think the answer is supply, some think the answer is to focus only on affordable development, some think it is tenant protections, and others think the answer is all of the above. What is the answer? What are some of the ideas floating around? And what ideas have traction?

Join us as we tackle these hard questions with a great panel of experts, including:

The Ghost Ship fire in Oakland threw the impact of the affordable housing crisis on the artist community into sharp focus. Rising rents have long put increasing pressure on artists living in non-traditional spaces, and now the crisis is coming to a head.. The need for a solution is urgent. Please join our expert panel for a discussion on how to make our communities affordable for artists and creatives.

Housing Authority 50th Anniversary Movie Night: “Time Out of Mind”

The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Clara celebrate 50 years of serving the Santa Clara County community with a screening of the Oren Moverman movie “Time Out of Mind,” featuring Richard Gere as a newly homeless man learning how to adapt to life on the streets. Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News called the film “never less than powerful,” saying that “without sentimentality or gloss, it illuminates a part of city life that far too often is lost in the shadows.” The Housing Authority will be providing a free soda and popcorn voucher to all participants, as well as a small thank you gift.

It’s no secret that the Bay Area is grappling with a regional housing shortage and all the negative consequences that come with it. Many argue that this is a regional issue that that needs a regional vision and regional tools. What is the role of regional government on housing? How can jurisdictions better collaborate across boundaries? Come tackle these thorny questions with SPUR’s panel:

Affordable Housing Tour
Saturday, May 13th from 8:30 AM-1:30 PM
Hosted by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group

The 2017 Tour will focus on the relationships between health and housing, and feature the cities of Mountain View, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale. The Tour will begin in Mountain View at the Prometheus Madera Apartments with a panel discussion on “Healthy Housing.” The second stop will be in Santa Clara at the Core Companies Presidio Santa Clara. The final stop will be in Sunnyvale at MidPen Housing’s Onizuka Crossing where they will serve lunch and a hold a panel session with local stakeholders from the housing community.

Tour admission includes breakfast/lunch and transportation costs.

MicroPAD Showcase and Missing Middle Panel

The City of Mountain View will exhibit an innovative form of modular housing called a MicroPAD. The tiny, modular home will be on display at the intersection of Castro and Mercy streets in Mountain View, right outside city hall.  Read more about MicroPADs at Panoramic Interests’ website.

The City will also be host a panel focusing on the “Missing Middle,” featuring a speaker from Panoramic Interests as well as other innovators. You can RSVP for the panel on the eventbrite page.

Fair Housing Presentation for Landlords and Property Managers

Law Foundation of Silicon Valley staff will provide an overview of current fair housing laws, recent court decisions, best practices to prevent violations of these laws, and tips for handling fair housing complaints when managing rental property. This free workshop is hosted by the City of Sunnyvale’s Housing Division and is open to the general public. Spanish language interpretation will be available.
