Getting Inclusionary Housing Right

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 12PM

Cities across Santa Clara County are considering this powerful tool to build more new affordable homes without subsidy.

But done wrong it can fall short, or even stop the development of new homes in its tracks. Learn how it works, and how to get it right!

Many of our local cities are joining forces right now in a shared nexus study, the wonky and in-depth analysis that assesses the feasibility of local residential development and the potential for developers of market-rate housing to add a share of affordable homes to their buildings.

If cities require too few affordable homes or affordability that’s too shallow, they leave public benefits on the table. Too much, and developers can’t build any housing at all.

Come hear about local cities that are getting it right: successfully using inclusionary housing policies to achieve mixed-income communities, generate funding to subsidize deeper levels of affordability, and gain valuable land for affordable homes!

SV@Home congratulates Preservation & Protection Associate Emily Ann Ramos on her appointment to the Mountain View City Council! A tireless advocate for housing justice in both her personal and professional life, Emily has been deeply engaged in her home city of Mountain View for years. Emily received five out of six votes for appointment from the councilmembers, and will serve the remaining two years of the term of Sally Lieber, who resigned to join the California State Board of Equalization.

The Mountain View City Council appointed Emily Ann Ramos to fill its vacant seat at a special meeting on January 30. Ramos will replace former Councilmember Sally Lieber, who vacated the seat late last year after being elected to the California State Board of Equalization.

Councilmembers narrowed down the wide applicant pool to just four candidates who were then given 30 minutes to answer pre-set questions about a variety of issues. Ramos prevailed in a 6-1 vote after more than 40 community members voiced their support for her during public comment.

Ramos is an active housing advocate and has been involved with various community organizations including the Rental Housing Committee. In 2022, State Senator Josh Becker named her Senate District 13’s Woman of the Year for her work with SV@Home, a regional nonprofit affordable housing advocacy organization, where she currently serves as a preservation and protection associate.

During her interview, Ramos indicated housing issues are a top priority and she plans to address through expanded housing programs and protection of public parks and spaces.

Ramos is set to be sworn in at the February 14 City Council meeting.
