Destination: Home Launches “Right at Home,” A National Strategy to Prevent Homelessness

This week, our longtime partner Destination: Home has launched Right At Home– a bold new national effort to help communities end homelessness before it begins, emphasizing the role of homelessness prevention as a core component of any comprehensive strategy to address homelessness.

On Tuesday, February 24th, our longtime partner Destination: Home launched Right At Home. This bold new national effort is built on a simple, evidence-backed idea: When people receive timely support before losing their housing, more people remain housed.

Half of all U.S. renters cannot afford their housing costs, and economic pressures are pushing more people into crisis every day. Research shows that we can avoid this with an approach including prevention, not just response. Many individuals on the brink of homelessness are behind on rent or other bills. A relatively small amount of cash can go a long way to overcoming those challenges. We can prevent homelessness before it begins by supporting those most at risk of losing their homes.

Right at Home is modeled after the country’s first rigorously proven homelessness prevention initiative. Led by Destination: Home, the evidence-backed Santa Clara County program provided rapid, flexible financial assistance to support families on the brink of housing loss. The result was that more than 90% of those who received support remained housed even after two years.

Right At Home seeks to bring that model to more places, ensuring that progress does not depend on short-term funding cycles or one-time investments.

For SV@Home, this launch reflects the power of partnership and shared vision. As housing costs rise nationwide and more communities confront growing homelessness, local leadership and sustained funding are more critical than ever.

We encourage our supporters to learn more about Right At Home and share its vision. Together, we can move beyond managing homelessness toward ending it- ensuring that everyone has a safe, stable place to call home.
