Affordability of ADUs is under increasing pressure from rising costs of everything from labor to materials to interest rates. Although ADUs are still less expensive to develop than a primary home, and a majority of them rent for less than traditional apartments and homes, it’s clear that incentives, interventions and innovative strategies are needed to improve equitable adoption of ADUs by a broader range of homeowners. We’ll talk with the innovators who are finding solutions to the complex challenges of ADU affordability to reduce the cost of building an ADU, to add affordable rentals to their communities, and in some cities outside California, to create below-market homeownership opportunities. We’ll also look at alternatives to ADUs, such as tiny homes on wheels, homesharing and Junior ADUs, that add living space and rental income for homeowners at a dramatically lower cost.
