Hosted by the Health Trust

10:00 am -11:00 am  on Tuesday, May 16, 2017

After the release of its Food for Everyone report in March 2016, the Health Trust spearheaded a strategy to improve food security for residents in affordable housing in San Jose. Working together with partners, including the San Jose Housing Department, Second Harvest Food Bank, Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen, and Valley Verde, the Health Trust convened and surveyed affordable housing developers and service providers to assess residents’ food access needs and the feasibility of food programming at individual housing sites. Building on these site assessments and the analysis in Food for Everyone, the Health Trust and its partners were able to develop data-driven solutions for over 25 housing sites in San Jose. This presentation will focus on the process behind Food for Everyone, including a collaboration between the Health Trust and Life Skills Training and Education Programs (LifeSTEPS) to improve food security for seniors living in affordable housing. With a grant from the Health Trust, LifeSTEPS has been able to identify the barriers experienced by their senior residents to getting food and test out creative solutions for residents who are unable to get around easily or leave their homes.
