Where Did the Students Go? Housing & the School Enrollment Crisis

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH 12PM

Silicon Valley is becoming too expensive for families and our schools are paying the price. Enrollment is dropping, campuses are closing, and beloved school communities are being torn apart.

At the same time, teachers and staff face grueling commutes from far-away cities, while districts struggle to hire and keep the talent our kids deserve.

Join us for an inside look at SV@Home’s exclusive research on Silicon Valley’s enrollment crisis—and discover how affordable housing can keep families in our neighborhoods and strengthen schools across our region.

RSVP now and join the conversation.

This event is hosted by City of San José Housing Department as part of Affordable Housing Month 2021.

What is interim housing? How does it differ from homeless shelters? How does it complement permanent supportive housing? The City of San José is a national leader and innovator in interim housing. The City currently operates five interim housing sites. This approach to housing offers compelling benefits vis-à-vis more traditional approaches to addressing homelessness. However, there are significant tradeoffs.

Join us for a fascinating discussion about the role of interim housing in combating homelessness, and hear experts share what they have learned since San José opened its first interim housing site 16 months ago.

Ramona Giwargis, editor-in-chief of San José Spotlight, will moderate the discussion. Joining her will be Ragan Henninger, deputy director of the San José Housing Department, and René Ramirez, chief operating officer of HomeFirst.
