Where Did the Students Go? Housing & the School Enrollment Crisis

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH 12PM

Silicon Valley is becoming too expensive for families and our schools are paying the price. Enrollment is dropping, campuses are closing, and beloved school communities are being torn apart.

At the same time, teachers and staff face grueling commutes from far-away cities, while districts struggle to hire and keep the talent our kids deserve.

Join us for an inside look at SV@Home’s exclusive research on Silicon Valley’s enrollment crisis—and discover how affordable housing can keep families in our neighborhoods and strengthen schools across our region.

On June 3rd, the Palo Alto City Council is set to discuss plans for a remade Cubberley Community Center. The site is owned by the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD), with 8 acres leased by the city, so the planning process will involve decisions by both the city and the school district. We expect that the Council will be directing staff on which options they should study, so housers will be out in force to advocate for keeping all housing options on the table!

This council meeting follows a series of community meetings during the first half of this year during which participants developed a number of land use alternatives, as shown below.

The alternatives contemplate various mixes of PAUSD staff housing with potential affordable senior or city staff housing. SV@Home is most excited about option 4, which could deliver at least 64 units of PAUSD staff housing along with 100 units of affordable senior or city staff housing.

The full information about the Cubberley Master Planning Process can be found on Palo Alto USD’s Cubberley Co-Design site.
