Getting Inclusionary Housing Right

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 12PM

Cities across Santa Clara County are considering this powerful tool to build more new affordable homes without subsidy.

But done wrong it can fall short, or even stop the development of new homes in its tracks. Learn how it works, and how to get it right!

Many of our local cities are joining forces right now in a shared nexus study, the wonky and in-depth analysis that assesses the feasibility of local residential development and the potential for developers of market-rate housing to add a share of affordable homes to their buildings.

If cities require too few affordable homes or affordability that’s too shallow, they leave public benefits on the table. Too much, and developers can’t build any housing at all.

Come hear about local cities that are getting it right: successfully using inclusionary housing policies to achieve mixed-income communities, generate funding to subsidize deeper levels of affordability, and gain valuable land for affordable homes!

May is Bike Month AND Affordable Housing Month. So, let’s go on a bike ride to learn about affordable housing!

Do you like bikes? Do you like learning things on your bike? Come out for a ride that explores affordable housing in Palo Alto by bike!

The ride is an approximately 12-mile route stopping at two to three affordable housing developments and the city’s Opportunity Center. We will learn more about how the developments were built and how they operate, while also learning about safe bike infrastructure. We will finish at Palo Alto City Hall (250 Hamilton Avenue) where folks can grab lunch at their favorite restaurant and check out the Affordable Housing Resource Fair, which begins at 1:00 p.m.

For the even more curious, arrive at 9:30am for coffee with Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition Board Chair and Palo Alto Forward Executive Director, Amie Ashton.

What to bring:
  • A working bicycle
  • Flat repair kit (optional)
  • Layers of clothing given weather forecast
  • Helmet
  • Water
  • Snacks (if you like)

If you’d like to volunteer to help keep riders safe on the street, please sign up for a Volunteer Ride Support ticket.
