Getting Inclusionary Housing Right

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 12PM

Cities across Santa Clara County are considering this powerful tool to build more new affordable homes without subsidy.

But done wrong it can fall short, or even stop the development of new homes in its tracks. Learn how it works, and how to get it right!

Many of our local cities are joining forces right now in a shared nexus study, the wonky and in-depth analysis that assesses the feasibility of local residential development and the potential for developers of market-rate housing to add a share of affordable homes to their buildings.

If cities require too few affordable homes or affordability that’s too shallow, they leave public benefits on the table. Too much, and developers can’t build any housing at all.

Come hear about local cities that are getting it right: successfully using inclusionary housing policies to achieve mixed-income communities, generate funding to subsidize deeper levels of affordability, and gain valuable land for affordable homes!

URGENT: Zoom In to Support Affordable Housing in Santa Clara’s Civic Center

Dear Housing Advocate,

It’s time to ACTLet the Santa Clara City Council know that you support Affordable Housing by speaking up in support of the 1601 Civic Center project in the City of Santa Clara.

When: Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. (Item Number 6 on the agenda – Second Action Item)

Sample talking points – Why it matters:

  • The 1601 Civic Center development will continue the City of Santa Clara’s commitment to affordable housing
  • Adds 108 new affordable homes in an established neighborhood with great access to transit, shopping, and open space
  • Charities Housing reconfigured the project to respond to community concerns and has agreed to additional steps recommended by the Planning Commission, including access to transit passes for future residents
  • Meets current needs for housing people can afford and creates a sustainable asset to the community for generations

If you cannot zoom in, our partners at the Housing Action Coalition have created an easy way to send a letter of support to the City Council.

SV@Home has supported this 5-story, 100 percent affordable project because all of the new homes will be below market rate for Santa Clara residents who need them the most. Residents of the City of Santa Clara are suffering from a housing shortage, which is driving a displacement and affordability crisis.

Tell the City Council to support the 1601 Civic Center project to deliver homes people can afford in resource-rich areas.  This critical new development has earned the support of the Greenbelt Alliance, Catalyze SV, the Housing Action Coalition, and many residents of the neighborhood not only because of its promise to deliver 100 percent affordable housing, but also because of its robust environmental and community benefits.
