Getting Inclusionary Housing Right

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 12PM

Cities across Santa Clara County are considering this powerful tool to build more new affordable homes without subsidy.

But done wrong it can fall short, or even stop the development of new homes in its tracks. Learn how it works, and how to get it right!

Many of our local cities are joining forces right now in a shared nexus study, the wonky and in-depth analysis that assesses the feasibility of local residential development and the potential for developers of market-rate housing to add a share of affordable homes to their buildings.

If cities require too few affordable homes or affordability that’s too shallow, they leave public benefits on the table. Too much, and developers can’t build any housing at all.

Come hear about local cities that are getting it right: successfully using inclusionary housing policies to achieve mixed-income communities, generate funding to subsidize deeper levels of affordability, and gain valuable land for affordable homes!

The Community Roots Collaborative (CRC) is back! After launching the CRC program in 2024, SV@Home has brought the cohort back and with new members and additional organizations! We continue to bring together a cohort of over 15 Santa Clara County-based organizations to learn more about and facilitate community development in our county. These last couple of weeks we held an orientation meeting and our first convening out of seven for the year. Here are the highlights to the first convening:

  • The cohort voted on two tour locations they’d like to visit: The Unity Council (a Social Equity Development Corporation) in Oakland’s Fruitvale Neighborhood and the San Francisco Community Land Trust
  • SV@Home announced a One-on-One Strategic Consulting service to the CRC cohort so we can provide intimate support on their community development journeys. Up to six cohort members will be selected based on their application submittals.
  • Our very own Deputy Director of Strategy, Joshua Ishimatsu, held a presentation and facilitated a community discussion on the phases of the development process, site control/ownership, and introductory topics on buying a property
  • SV@Home and the CRC cohort signed a list of agreements and commitments to continue their strong engagement in the Collaborative here on out.

Throughout 2025, SV@Home will bring in more featured speakers to discuss deeper topics on community development, such as basics on acquiring properties, fundraising, building and maintaining a network of partners and vendors, and more!
