Getting Inclusionary Housing Right

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 12PM

Cities across Santa Clara County are considering this powerful tool to build more new affordable homes without subsidy.

But done wrong it can fall short, or even stop the development of new homes in its tracks. Learn how it works, and how to get it right!

Many of our local cities are joining forces right now in a shared nexus study, the wonky and in-depth analysis that assesses the feasibility of local residential development and the potential for developers of market-rate housing to add a share of affordable homes to their buildings.

If cities require too few affordable homes or affordability that’s too shallow, they leave public benefits on the table. Too much, and developers can’t build any housing at all.

Come hear about local cities that are getting it right: successfully using inclusionary housing policies to achieve mixed-income communities, generate funding to subsidize deeper levels of affordability, and gain valuable land for affordable homes!

City of Mountain View and County of Santa Clara staff have been meeting regularly regarding the opportunity to convert the Crestview Hotel, located at 901 E. El Camino Real, into a residential use to meet various housing needs and priorities. The County has been leading the negotiation process with the hotel owner to acquire the site and anticipates beginning the two-step Board of Supervisors’ approval process in the September/October time frame.

A second community meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, August 19, from 6-7:30 p.m. This meeting will be led by the County with continued close coordination with the City. During the meeting, more information will be provided to attendees about the need for affordable housing including for the unsheltered, the unsheltered population already living in Mountain View, funding, tenant selection process, and other priority topics that surfaced during the first meeting. The County expects to mail out notices on Monday, August 2, to neighboring properties using a 1000’ radius.
