Getting Inclusionary Housing Right

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 12PM

Cities across Santa Clara County are considering this powerful tool to build more new affordable homes without subsidy.

But done wrong it can fall short, or even stop the development of new homes in its tracks. Learn how it works, and how to get it right!

Many of our local cities are joining forces right now in a shared nexus study, the wonky and in-depth analysis that assesses the feasibility of local residential development and the potential for developers of market-rate housing to add a share of affordable homes to their buildings.

If cities require too few affordable homes or affordability that’s too shallow, they leave public benefits on the table. Too much, and developers can’t build any housing at all.

Come hear about local cities that are getting it right: successfully using inclusionary housing policies to achieve mixed-income communities, generate funding to subsidize deeper levels of affordability, and gain valuable land for affordable homes!

The purpose of the meeting is to bring partners, supporters and friends from Gilroy, Morgan Hill and San Martin together so that we can all work more effectively together when advocacy is needed.

We will start with a presentation of tools and resources available to support advocacy objectives, then take some time to brainstorm and discuss specific advocacy priorities related to housing and homelessness, and finish up with a discussion of how we can work together to make progress moving forward.

AGENDA

  • Tools and resources (What help do we have?)
  • Advocacy priorities (What do we want?)
  • Next steps (What do we do next?)

Tools and resources in South County currently include the Community Plan to End Homelessness, the housing element process, and increasing local interest in advancing new programs and policy to address homelessness and affordable housing needs.

Advocacy priorities recently advocated by individual and grassroots groups in South County include identification of more sites for deeply affordable housing and supportive housing, city support for safe parking programs, additional resources for case management and outreach work. Agenda updates coming soon. Register here for updates when they become available.
