Getting Inclusionary Housing Right

JOIN US VIRTUALLY ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH 12PM

Cities across Santa Clara County are considering this powerful tool to build more new affordable homes without subsidy.

But done wrong it can fall short, or even stop the development of new homes in its tracks. Learn how it works, and how to get it right!

Many of our local cities are joining forces right now in a shared nexus study, the wonky and in-depth analysis that assesses the feasibility of local residential development and the potential for developers of market-rate housing to add a share of affordable homes to their buildings.

If cities require too few affordable homes or affordability that’s too shallow, they leave public benefits on the table. Too much, and developers can’t build any housing at all.

Come hear about local cities that are getting it right: successfully using inclusionary housing policies to achieve mixed-income communities, generate funding to subsidize deeper levels of affordability, and gain valuable land for affordable homes!

The Santa Clara County Housing Authority will be hosting a Virtual Open House on April 20th to share final designs for our portion of the former San José Hospital site (675 E. Santa Clara St.). This will be the last community meeting for this project, after which the Housing Authority will submit their development permit application to the City.

We also wanted to share an update about the project. As you may recall, the proposal previously included plans for a new office building for the Housing Authority. However, the Housing Authority has since purchased an existing office building at an alternative site in North San Jose. Based on input from the City of San Jose during our preliminary review process, the Housing Authority is excited to develop two additional housing projects where the previous office building was located. We are excited the Housing Authority will be providing additional affordable homes to the project to help address the County’s housing crisis!

Please refer to the Housing Authority website for a summary of input from the last round of community engagement and an updated FAQ: http://www.scchousingauthority.org/esc.

As always, feel free to reach out with any questions at esc@scchousingauthority.org.
