2016 Housing Bond Dashboard

In 2016, Santa Clara County voters approved Measure A (also known as the 2016 Housing Bond), authorizing $950 million in bonds for affordable housing. This passing was a landmark funding measure for housing affordability across Silicon Valley. Measure A is an example long spoken about and applauded in housing circles around the area for its efficiency at producing housing for those who need it. The funds generated supported acquiring or improving properties for residents who struggle to secure stable housing, including people exiting homelessness, veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, low- to moderate-income households, foster youth, abuse survivors, and individuals with mental illness or substance-use challenges.

By 2017, the County had already funded six developments with dedicated supportive housing units. Measure A dollars can be used for below-market rental or ownership housing and to pair housing with essential mental health and substance-use services. As Measure A nears the end of its funding pool, stakeholders are confronted with the challenge of navigating a landscape without its substantial support.  As stakeholders grapple with the foreseeable end of Measure A funds, the need for continued collaboration, creative solutions, and exploration of new funding avenues echoes louder, emphasizing the importance of the foundation laid by the housing bond and the opportunity to build up that foundation lies ahead.
