Meet Carrie, the 2025 Summer Housing Justice Intern

Share:

Meet Carrie Chang, one of two SV@Home Housing Justice 2025 Summer Interns! This summer, she has been investigating trends in the Santa Clara County affordable housing pipeline. Such research findings can be used to inform where and how affordable homes are being created as well as where they may be facing obstacles, ultimately advancing SV@Home’s advocacy efforts

Carrie is an undergraduate student at San Jose State University and is one of two Housing Justice Summer Interns at SV@Home! As part of SV@Home’s internship program, each intern completes a capstone project that supports organizational goals and innovation. Carrie’s culminating project this summer has been conducting in-depth data collection and analysis of Santa Clara County’s affordable housing pipeline. She is excited to be working on urgently needed research in a region that is grappling with a severe housing affordability crisis. The overarching purpose of her capstone project is to track affordable housing production timelines, assess funding opportunity-need, and identify potential barriers in the development pipeline. So far, this work has involved thorough examination of publicly available data, including Santa Clara County Housing Elements Annual Progress Report and California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (CTCAC) awards. Carrie will translate her findings into digestible summaries and data visualizations that will be valuable for both public outreach and internal reports to shape advocacy efforts and policy recommendations.

Outside of her role at SV@Home, Carrie is completing a BS in Public Health with a Minor in Statistics. Her medium- and long-term career goal is to apply research and data science to evaluate how public health solutions are effectively addressing social disparities and advancing health equity. She believes that SV@Home’s mission aligns with her passion for public health, offering invaluable practical experience in applying data-driven solutions and tools to safe, stable, and affordable housing that can help foster better health outcomes

When Carrie is not at the office, she can usually be found driving to her favorite bookstore in downtown Campbell, engaged in one-person car karaoke to 2000s emo and pop-punk hits. She also harbors an unabashed love for cooking, illustration, horror movies and novels, and her dog. Carrie will be returning to campus in late August for her final year of her baccalaureate studies.
