SAN JOSE, Calif. – May 3, 2022 – Highly-acclaimed chef, author, and activist Bryant Terry will sign copies of one of his two cookbooks nominated for the prestigious James Beard 2022 Media Awards in San Jose this Thursday, May 5th at 6 p.m.. Registration is required for the free event, SV@Home Presents: A Night of Food and Conversation with Chef Bryant Terry, held in person at 450 W. Santa Clara Ct. or virtually via Zoom. Register here. The event is one of more than 50 scheduled for Affordable Housing Month 2022 – Silicon Valley.

Fifty free copies of Terry’s book, entitled Black Food: Stories, Art, and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora will be available at the in-person event on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be signed by the author after his cooking demonstration and Question & Answer session with the audience. Terry’s third of four cookbooks, Vegetable Kingdom: The Abundant World of Vegan Recipes, was also nominated for a James Beard 2022 Media Awardwhich highlights the strongest pieces of food writing and production across books, news sites and broadcast.

Since 2015, Terry has served as chef-in-residence at San Francisco’s Museum of the African Diaspora. He is also a champion of a healthy, just, and sustainable food system, and his cooking demonstration will tie into his activism. In his past, Terry engaged community members in the lower economic strata in New York City, where he helped shift the attitudes of the disenfranchised to empower positive change. One of the first steps in these engagements was to encourage people to change to a healthier diet to feel better when they advocated for change.

“A powerful way to begin a course change is to feel invested in the community,” Terry said of his activist days. “I tell people that if they want to improve their communities, they have to shift their mindset, get involved, and build a collective for community empowerment because we are stronger together if we want to make changes.”

Change is also on the agenda for attendees of Affordable Housing Month 2022. SV@Home conducts this annual event to get community members involved in alleviating the region’s housing crisis by participating in the nearly 50 webinars and interactive events intended to raise awareness, educate, and encourage advocacy. Silicon Valley residents are urged to learn about and participate in the public processes and policies that can make housing more affordable and accessible to people of all incomes and abilities.

All participants need to register in advance for admission. To learn more about Affordable Housing Month 2022 – Silicon Valley, visit this webpage: https://siliconvalleyathome.org/affordable-housing-month.
