Palo Alto City Council took an important step forward on housing last week, voting 6-1 to advance the San Antonio Road Area Plan into its next phase of analysis. The decision keeps a more ambitious vision for the corridor on the table, one that could accommodate approximately 6,700 homes while improving transit access, parks, and neighborhood serving amenities.

Earlier this week, the Palo Alto City Council took an important step forward on the San Antonio Road Area Plan, voting 6-1 to advance the effort into its next phase of analysis. SV@Home was proud to support the item, which endorsed a core land use and transportation framework for the corridor and directed staff to continue refining the plan. While additional analysis and community engagement remain ahead, the vote marks an important milestone in one of Palo Alto’s most significant long term planning efforts.

The San Antonio Road corridor plays a critical role in Palo Alto’s strategy for accommodating future housing growth and implementing its Housing Element commitments. The framework endorsed by Council would explore a scenario that accommodates approximately 6,700 homes (roughly 1,000 more than current zoning would allow), while pairing new housing with transportation improvements, open space, neighborhood serving retail, and connections to the San Antonio Caltrain Station. Just as importantly, the plan recognizes that housing, transportation, and economic vitality are interconnected and should be planned together.

We want to thank City staff for the thoughtful work that has gone into the Area Plan process, as well as the City Council for supporting a housing forward framework as the project moves into its next phase. We are particularly encouraged by Council’s decision to continue evaluating an ambitious vision for the corridor while studying the transportation, infrastructure, and community benefits needed to support future growth. We look forward to remaining engaged as the plan is refined and returns to Council later this year.

Follow the San Antonio Road Area Plan as it advances through future study sessions and public hearings. The decisions made over the coming year will help shape how Palo Alto accommodates future housing growth while creating more connected, walkable, and sustainable neighborhoods.
