New Event! Join us for a lunchtime panel exploring DEI within the affordable housing ecosystem on January 25. Designing Inclusively to House Affordably: RSVP here!

Inclusion in Design, Housing & Development

A lunchtime panel exploring DEI within the affordable housing ecosystem

Inclusive design is central to building affordable and accessible housing but is often viewed as a matter of compliance, rather than an opportunity to strengthen every aspect of a project. What do we mean when we say we work, design, and house inclusively? How do we approach imbalances of process and outcome, of representation and decision-making? How do we start to enact meaningful, lasting change – and how do we do so at scale?

On Wednesday, January 26 at 12-1pm PT, Steven Yang, Director of Multifamily Lending & DEI Lead at Housing Trust Silicon Valley, will be in conversation with:

  • Micaela Connery, Co-founder and CEO of The Kelsey
  • Sydnee Freeman, Director of Real Estate Development at Designing Justice + Designing Spaces
  • Rod Henmi, Design Director at HKIT Architects

… and you! We’d love to hear where you’re coming from, where your interest in this topic resides, and what questions you’d like us to discuss. Please fill out this short form ahead of the event (by Friday, January 21) and we’ll include you in the conversation.

This event is organized by SV@Home’s Coalition of Housers; it will be recorded and live captioned.

Below you’ll find updates and information for the

SV@Home January HAC: Tenant Protections

The HAC is a monthly, informal brownbag discussion convening Housers to engage on hot housing topics. Every month, we select a topic or current event, bring in an expert to give a brief presentation, and then open up the discussion to ask questions, float new ideas, and identify potential areas for shared action.

This month, we are looking at tenant protections.

In 2017, city council directed staff to look into ways to protect Palo Alto renters and keep them housed. The subsequent conversion of the Hotel President from housing back into a hotel led to the eviction of many downtown residents, sparking more calls for protections from eviction leading to another colleague’s memo seeking more action.

In response, the city applied for a Challenge Grant from the Partnership for the Bay’s Future. Through the Challenge Grant the City has been able to create a profile of Palo Alto renters and research renter protection policies that would benefit Palo Altans. Come learn more about Palo Alto’s approach to tenant protections, how some of these policies can be adopted throughout the county and share your thoughts!

Featured Speakers:

  • Angie Evans, Palo Alto Renter’s Association
  • Lauren Bigelow, Partnership for the Bay’s Future Fellow for the City of Palo Alto
